Mission Awareness Team
Posted - 4/29/2008

Have you noticed people putting items in the baskets and the dresser located on the north end of Fellowship Hall? Thank you for all the generous giving in April! Check out the baskets . . . They are the opportunities you have to help others!!

Please pray for the projects and the persons served by them. Each of us has opportunities to be in mission. As we work together in mission, UMCL will be stronger and Christ’s Kingdom here in Le Mars and all over the world will be stronger, too! On April 20, Pastor Josh told us in the United States there are 100,000,000 (yes, 100 million) who don’t know Jesus. How many will UMCL reach out to? How many will com to k now Jesus personally because we stepped out in faith to meet them where they are?

A Church for the City is the term Pastors Jason and Josh use often as they talk about the mission of the United Methodist Church of Le Mars. If you know of needs in our community, please let a member of our team know. We are praying about how we can reach into our city in the name of Jesus. Please contact: Duane Ferrie, Ann Harms, Dave Hinds, Clayton Hodgson, Barb Johnson, Jeannie McDougall, Dolores Shuff or Pat Warner.

Africa 2010—United Methodist missionaries Larry and Jane Kies serve at Africa Unitersity in Zimbabwe. They will be at UMCL in last summer or early fall. M.A.T. is working on sending a team of missionaries from UMCL to Africa University in the summer of 2010 to do a work project! The cost will be at least $3500 per person with the trip being at least 14 days. We are in the early stages of planning. Please pray for this. We will be holding our first organizational meeting in September. Check out the website: www.africau.edu

Christian Needs Center—Located at 900 6th Street SW, Le Mars. Hours: 10 am—1 pm and 2—4 pm every Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday. Currently, they are accepting clothing and knick-knacks. No large furniture please. Their food pantry needs are anything you want to give—groceries and paper goods. No fresh produce, please. With summer coming and more kids at home, the needs will be greater. The first Sunday of each month, the Mission Awareness Team encourages everyone to bring items. We anticipate an overflowing basket of goods. April’s giving was very limited. Let’s make May much better!

Council on Sexual Assault and Domestic Violence (CSADV) - They are in need of food for their food pantry, especially meat items and gift cards to Fareway or Hy-Vee. They are completely out of gas cards and discount store cards. You can leave your donation in the CSADV basket and M.A.T. will deliver them for you!

Dresser Ministry—Dresser #8 is filled. The mom is soon moving from her parent’s home into her apartment and we will deliver it to her new home! Dresser #9 will soon be here. Check out the top of the dresser. You will find a list of everything needed (the list has recently changed). Choose an item to purchase, put your initials on the blank, purchase the item, put it in the drawer and put an X on top of your initials. This filled dresser will go to an expectant mom and will give her and her baby great joy during the baby’s first year.

Local Needs—Beds in good shape are needed to give away. Mattresses and box springs are great. Frames are not necessary, but we will take them also. Yes, there are people in Le Mars who are sleeping on the floor because they do not have and cannot afford a bed, as other bills/needs are more pressing. Contact Duane Ferrie or Barb Johnson.

Plymouth County Jail—paperback books are what to put in this basket. No romance . . . yes to mystery, history, biblical and humor. Some inmates have fourth and fifth-grade reading levels, so easier books are welcome! Spanish, too!

Plymouth Life—residents at Plymouth Life (located on Hwy 3 East) are in need of toiletry items: shampoo, rinse, shaving cream, lotion, chapstick, combs, brushes, toothpaste, toothbrushes, mouthwash, etc. This ministry is a great way to help our community. Your giving is making a difference . . . keep it up!

Spring Service—Kelsey Driver headed a team from Northwestern Collge in Orange City that served in Oklahoma in March. This team will be presenting at UMCL during worship on May 4.
Summer Service Projects and Trip—M.A.T. has a list of possible service projects. At our May 20 meeting we will be deciding where to go for the next mission trip. We are also developing a list of opportunities here in Le Mars where UMCL members and friends can do service work. If you know of needs in Le Mars, please contact Barb Johnson to get on the list.
